Trump, European Union leaders pull back from trade war

The European Commission has reacted with retaliatory tariffs, but new United States levies on cars would prompt Europe to take further action.

Additionally, USDA will use CCC Charter Act and other authorities to implement a Food Purchase and Distribution Program through the Agricultural Marketing Service to purchase "unexpected surplus of affected commodities such as fruits, nuts, rice, legumes, beef, pork and milk for distribution to food banks and other nutrition programs".

But Australia's National Farmer's Federation (NFF) President Tony Maher said it is a blow to drought-stricken farmers in this country.

Senators say the aid package could help short-term, but they're anxious about losing long-term access to export markets.

"Both the USA and the European Union drop all Tariffs, Barriers and Subsidies!"

Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee says, "Instead of offering welfare to farmers" to solve a problem the administration created, it "should reverse course and end this incoherent policy". The EU has a huge stake in the US industry, where European companies produce nearly 3 million cars a year, accounting for over a quarter of production in the United States.

On another front, Mr. Trump's administration has hit even its close allies the European Union (EU), Canada and Mexico, with levies on steel and aluminium exports to the United States, prompting retaliation against iconic US products, including bourbon whiskey and orange juice.

Republican Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska, a Trump critic, likened it to "golden crutches" to make up for a trade war that will cost farmers far more. That's according to two people who have been briefed on the plan who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of a formal announcement.

Farmers are being targeted since they rely on export markets for agricultural produce and have broadly supported Trump. "They sound nice, but they're rough".

Guardiola says repeat of record-breaking season 'impossible'
I think if he didn't have an average final, I think he would have been the best player of the World Cup. If they believe it's the best for Liverpool and their fans, it's ideal for them, so no problem at all".

The US and European Union account for about US$1 trillion in trans-Atlantic trade, and tensions spiked leading up to Wednesday's high-stakes talks.

GM is only the latest company to blame lower-than-expected profits on either the Trump administration's tariffs or on tariffs that other nations have imposed in response to the Trump administration's tariffs.

"I just want to conclude by saying this was a very big day for free and fair trade", Trump said.

"I think President Juncker believes he is here to try to calm the situation and get into a negotiating process to stave off potential United States tariffs on autos".

Europe agreed to buy more soybeans and natural gas from the United States, and Trump agreed not to put any more tariffs, for now, on the E.U. Traders cheered the news, sending the stock market higher.

The president is meeting with European officials on Wednesday at the White House.

Seated in the Oval Office, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told Trump that the two trading partners were "allies, not enemies" and said they needed to work together to address recent frictions involving Trump's threats to impose tariffs on auto imports and EU plans to retaliate. I don't fault the President for trying to get a better deal for Americans, but it's not fair to expect farmers to bear the brunt of retaliation for the entire country in the meantime. "It's as simple as that".

U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, (R-Wash), wrote several messages on Twitter Tuesday praising the strong economy and a "permanent repeal of the job-crushing medical device tax", but made no mention of Perdue's announced aid package for farmers. He notes that countries "that have treated us unfairly on trade for years" are coming to Washington to negotiate.
