Business leaders in Lancashire have reacted with exasperation after the shock resignation of Brexit Secretary David Davis.

Jeremy Hunt, appointed foreign secretary as May carried out a hurried reshuffle of her top team, vowed that he would be "four square" behind her in driving through her Brexit plan.

The former justice and housing minister served as chief of staff to Mr Davis when he was shadow Home Secretary from 2006 to 2010.

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford welcomed the resignation of Boris Johnson from the Foreign Office, telling Mrs May "he should have been sacked for being a national embarrassment".

But it soon began to unravel when Davis resigned late on Sunday and launched a no-holds-barred attack on her plan, calling it "dangerous" and one which would give "too much away, too easily" to European Union negotiators, who would simply ask for more. "And that's a unsafe strategy at this time".

"I get along with her very well, I have a very good relationship", he said. Mr Davis's deputy, Steve Baker, also resigned.

In his resignation letter, Johnson wrote: "Brexit should be about opportunity and hope. We need to engage with Europe as friends and partners, but they need to know that we are prepared to leave without a deal if need be".

"Being tied to European Union regulations and the European Union tying our hands when seeking to make new trade agreements will be the worst of all worlds", wrote the Mansfield MP, who voted remain in a constituency where more than 70 per cent of voters opted to leave.

Mr Davis had disagreed with the PM's plans for keeping European Union rules for goods and adopting a close customs partnership with the other 27 member countries.

We had more chances to score, but then we conceded the goals, which is not nice. Liverpool are next in action on Saturday when they travel to Bury.

Even if the prime minister were willing to go that far, Watson's intervention was a reminder to Labour opponents of Brexit that the party has deliberately kept a second referendum on the table.

In her response, Mrs May said that "I do not agree with your characterisation of the policy we agreed at cabinet on Friday".

The resignations came just days after May announced Saturday that she had finally united her quarrelsome government behind a plan for a divorce deal with the EU.

"With our leave date fast approaching we have no time for the mechanisms of a leadership challenge", he said. Some politicians have already expressed their misgivings.

Conservative chairman Brandon Lewis said: "Maria Caulfield and Ben Bradley have worked hard since the start of the year to promote women and young people on behalf of the Conservative Party".

Asked if the prime minister could survive.

Apart from this, Davis was disappointed by the fact that May and her supporters approved the strategy of UK's behavior after the Brexit without his participation. "It's more important to do what you have promised the British electorate than stick by lines in the sand".

"She talked about Corbyn, she talked about the alternative which is delivering the country to the sort of government that I don't think people have voted for and certainly any Conservative voter would be repelled by". The country is at a standstill with a divided and shambolic government.
