US envoy meets with North Korean officials in demilitarized zone

Sung Kim, formerly an ambassador to South Korea and a nuclear negotiator with the North during previous talks, has taken on a key role in dialogue with Pyongyang in recent months.

United States defense analysts have said North Korea retains as many as 60 nuclear bombs and a range of missiles.

Sharing Maneshi's concerns, Johnson also added, "It is evident that North Korea has not yet abandoned its nuclear weapons or existing nuclear programs, nor its missile programs".

But experts say there is no proof North Korea's halt of nuclear and missile tests means the North will take concrete steps to give up such weapons.

This comes on top of a Washington Post report that us intelligence believes the North Koreans are planning to hide the number of warheads in their arsenal.

At the same time, Mr. Bolton and other officials say they're well aware that, in the past, North Korea has used the pretext of negotiations to continue on with its nuclear programs in secret.

Speaking on CBS' "Face the Nation" on Sunday, White House national security adviser John Bolton said that Pompeo would be "discussing this with the North Koreans in the near future about really how to dismantle all of their WMD and ballistic missile programs in a year".

The White House refused to confirm or deny reports that Kim's regime has stepped up its nuclear program since the Trump summit.

Bolton said the "going to try and proceed to implement what the two leaders agreed to in Singapore", specifically "how to dismantle all of their WMD and ballistic missile programs in a year".

But Mr Trump told Fox News on Sunday that it was "possible" an agreement with North Korea he claimed would end its nuclear threat would not "work out".

Kim has also had three summits with China's leader and met with U.S. President Donald Trump last month in Singapore. If other elements of the USA intelligence community agree with the Defense Intelligence Agency's analysis, it could then become a so-called "finished intelligence product" or report that would be briefed to the highest levels of the administration.

Meanwhile, the USA team wants to put some meat on the bone of the four-point declaration signed June 12 in Singapore by President Trump and Mr. Kim. Those steps included halting nuclear and missile tests and destroying the Punggye-ri nuclear test site. "The realistic goals Pompeo can achieve from his visit would be making meetings with North Korean officials a regular thing and ensuring the return of the remains of USA soldiers killed during the Korean War, which could help maintain the momentum of dialogue". "I'll likely travel back before too terribly long", the top United States diplomat said in June.
