Unlike the last special election in Pennsylvania, where the Democratic candidate Conor Lamb outraised Rick Saccone 3 to 1, Balderson was better suited to take on O'Connor financially, although he was still operating at a deficit.

O'Connor said in a speech Tuesday that he's ready to go on to November, where he and Balderson will run again.

Battleground Ohio was deciding the year's final special election on Tuesday, a congressional faceoff that tested anew President Donald Trump's political clout - and the appeal of his signature tax cuts.

An O'Connor victory in the race to succeed retired GOP congressman Patrick Tiberi, in a wealthy suburban district that has voted Republican for decades, would be a massive shot in the arm for Democrats seeking to take back the House.

The special election in OH coincided with with a series of primaries for Senate, House and gubernatorial nominations in Kansas, Missouri, Michigan and Washington.

The most recent poll, released by Emerson College on Monday, called the race a dead heat.

Debbie Stabenow will take on military veteran and business executive John James, who won the Republican nomination.

"It's closer than originally thought, but it's a challenging midterm environment", said one national Republican strategist involved in the race.

Kansas Republicans were fighting among themselves in a battle for governor, where Secretary of State Kris Kobach was trying to unseat Gov. Jeff Colyer.

Senate Republicans had hoped to make MI, a state which Trump carried, competitive, but it's fallen down the list of top targets for 2018.

And even as they celebrated victory, one of those groups warned it can't be duplicated across the map in three months if some Republicans don't up their efforts.

In a special election season that featured almost a dozen congressional contests, Democrats claimed just a handful of wins, but they may have cause for optimism this fall. Kasich has been an outspoken leader of the anti-Trump Republicans. Republicans have controlled the district for 35 years.

The five-way Democratic primary featured labour lawyer Brent Welder, who campaigned recently with self-described democratic socialists Vermont Sen.

"A loss tonight would be devastating for the GOP - it should not be this close", Republican pollster Frank Luntz said in a tweet.

And in suburban Seattle, three Democrats vied in a jungle primary for the seat held by another retiring Republican, Rep. Dave Reichert.

O'Connor dominated Balderson on the local airwaves.

And in Missouri's 1st District, Democratic Rep. William Lacy Clay faces a challenge from the left from Cori Bush, a nurse and activist who has campaigned with Ocasio-Cortez.
