Huawei became the top brand in a declining China market and captured the second spot in the global smartphone shipment rankings for the first time in a single quarter, beating Apple. Huawei has been expanding aggressively in Europe and Africa, though it is blocked from the US.

Still, analysts said that Huawei's accomplishment was more than a blip.

Apple recorded a stellar quarter but was still overtaken by Huawei in the smartphone sales world rankings.

Samsung Electronics, the biggest smartphone maker globally but nearly a bit player in China, on Tuesday posted its slowest quarterly profit growth in more than a year as its Galaxy S9 lost ground to rivals.

New data from Counterpoint's Market Monitor service, shows that global smartphone shipments declined 2% annually in Q2 2018, to 360 million units.

Pathak also noted that Honor is driving overseas growth for Huawei. Its not just Samsung though, most companies relied on discounts and deals. Huawei gained the second position with the total smartphone shipment of 54.2 million globally during the second quarter.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei Technologies has beaten out its USA -based rival Apple Inc.

Revenue rose to 325.7 billion yuan ($47.97 billion), while operating margin rose to 14 percent, from 11 percent a year ago.
