Such was his lack of opportunities last term it was expected he would seek alternative opportunities this summer but the Evening Standard understand he will remain on Merseyside, with Liverpool keen on retaining his services.

The signing of Alisson from Roma in a world record fee for a goalkeeper was the latest blow to Karius' time at Anfield, but the move will have taken some of the pressure off of him.

That combines with the £75m purchase of Virgil van Dijk in January as Liverpool look for their first ever Premier League title.

The Champions League finalists will kick off as second favourites behind Manchester City, and they're seen as the Citizens' main rivals for a reason, as they dished out one of only two City defeats of the Premier League season a year ago.

"Of course, when managers spend big they have to deliver success and in Jurgen Klopp's case, that means a first trophy since he took charge of the Reds in October 2015".

Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports how Alisson's arrival will be a massive boost in confidence at the club after the drama of the Champions League final.

However, Klopp insists he has no issue with Can and it makes sense that he'd be happy enough with his midfield options thanks to the signings of Fabinho and Keita.

But former England midfielder Paul Merson believes the Reds should target a centre-back today with the transfer window closing at 5pm. "Their Achilles heel for me will be against the lesser teams and if they can break them down but I'm all over Liverpool, I think they're the team who will come second".

Klopp has only made minor alterations to his squad this summer, offloading just four players on permanent deals including Emre Can, Jon Flanagan, Jordan Williams and Danny Ward.

"We will see what happens".
