Indonesia's disaster agency says the death toll from the quake that shook Lombok island Sunday evening has risen to 131.

People crowd on the shore as they attempt to leave the Gili Islands after an quake Gili Trawangan, in Lombok, Indonesia, August 6, 2018, in this still image taken from a video. No casualties were reported.

People ran onto roads in panic and buildings were damaged, causing more "trauma", said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

Authorities are gathering information from family members with missing relatives to determine how many more people may have been in the buildings when they collapsed, national search and rescue agency spokesman Yusuf Latif told AFP.

The Indonesian Red Cross said it had set up 10 mobile clinics in the north of the island.

Buildings still standing on the island have been weakened after Sunday's 7.0 quake, as well as a 6.4 quake on July 29 that killed 16.

The latest quake was felt strongly on the island and followed a 6.9 quake on Sunday that killed at least 164 people and damaged thousands of houses.

Thousands of tourists visiting Lombok - as well as the nearby Gili Islands and Bali - have been evacuated or have chosen to leave since the weekend.

Still, government assistance was barely a trickle in the west Lombok village of Kekait where Zulas Triani, an elementary school teacher who was sharing a tent with 30 others, said they had received only a basket with three noodle packets, five eggs and a small ration of water.

In Kopang Daya, injured villagers got their first proper treatment Thursday after medics arrived with a portable X-ray and other supplies. "I do hope the government can help", she said.

An imam continued to pray and lead worshippers while a huge natural disaster tore through the mosque in the Indonesian resort of Bali, eliciting praises from every corner of the internet as the video of the incident went viral on social media.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it lies on the Ring of Fire - the line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions that circles virtually the entire Pacific rim.
