McGuane stated she knew her mother's death was a suicide when taken to the home.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Kidder's daughter Maggie McGuane said the family chose to make her mother's suicide public because "it's important to be open and honest about the suicide so there's no cloud of shame".

Regarding her family life, Kidder got married three different times throughout her life and has one daughter, Maggie McGuane. She believes it is important to be open and honest about suicide and not hide it.

Actress Margot Kidder, who appeared in well over 100 films and TV shows, according to the Internet Movie Database, but who also battled mental health issues which she discussed openly, died on May 13 at the age of 69.

In what may have been her final interview before her death, Kidder told WWJ's Sandra McNeill on May 9 she was "sad but not that sad" when her "Superman" co-star Christopher Reeve became a quadriplegic.

"It's a very unique sort of grief and pain", she said. Additionally, ambulances were called to Kidder's home five times in seven months, including at the time of her death. She wants to avoid any "cloud of shame". "Knowing how many families in this state go through this, I wish that I could reach out to each one of them". "She was really a blazing energy".

And she was known for her work as a mental-wellness advocate, in part because of her own struggles with mental health. Her most recent role was in 2017 with the indie The Neighborhood.

Canadian-born Kidder also appeared in 1975's The Great Waldo Pepper with Robert Redford and 1978's The Amityville Horror.
