McGuane stated she knew her mother's death was a suicide when taken to the home.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Kidder's daughter Maggie McGuane said the family chose to make her mother's suicide public because "it's important to be open and honest about the suicide so there's no cloud of shame".

Actress Margot Kidder, who appeared in well over 100 films and TV shows, according to the Internet Movie Database, but who also battled mental health issues which she discussed openly, died on May 13 at the age of 69.
