Mars closest to earth in 15 years today

A close encounter with Earth like this won't happen again until the year 2287.

The nearest point to Earth in Mars´ elliptical orbit came at around 1100 GMT on Tuesday, NASA said.

On the night of 31 July, Mars will be closest to the Earth in 15 years. Mars has been appearing brighter than usual since July 27, but tonight is the planet's closest approach to Earth.

NASA has captured many images of the planet-wide dust storm that has been affecting Mars since June this year.

But stick with us because this morning Mars will be just 35.8 million miles (57.6 million kilometres) away from Earth.

Woman, 5 children killed in southwest MI motel fire
A massive fire at a motel in MI early Saturday has killed one woman and five children from the same family, police said. Officials say 27 rooms of the motel, located near the shores of Lake Michigan, were occupied at the time of the fire.

In 2003, Mars and Earth were at their closest in almost 60,000 years, coming within 34.6 million miles of each other.

Even though some water may have been discovered there, Mars has less than 1% of the atmospheric pressure of that on Earth. The minimum distance from the Earth to Mars is about 33.9 million miles. Also, there is a global dust storm going on on Mars, which by the way is not totally rare, and that will allow the planet to look even brighter. Weather permitting, Mars will be visible low on the southwestern horizon, with the moon shining to the upper left.

The pictures were taken in June and July by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, and show that "Earth isn't the only planet where intense spring and summer storms wreak havoc", the United States agency said in a statement. So, all the space enthusiasts, who are keen to watch this phenomenon, you need not worry. Mars will still be visible in the night sky for the next few months.

The Red Planet is now brighter than usual and will glow even more - and look larger - tonight. Earth's second closest planetary neighbor will look exceptionally bright tonight and into early tomorrow morning. Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles will be hosting a live stream of the event. If you can, try and check our our nighttime neighbor with a telescope. Aldrin is an active proponent of humankind exploring farther out into the solar system and landing a crewed mission on Mars.
