British actor Idris Elba fuelled speculation on Sunday that he may be named the first black James Bond, with a cryptic tweet.

The actor posted a filtered selfie - only featuring the top part of his face - with the words "my name's Elba, Idris Elba".

Five hours later, he posted an image of Public Enemy, then tweeted "don't believe the HYPE", also the name of one of the rap group's biggest hits.

This time, a report from United Kingdom publication The Daily Star has stirred excitement.

The original story came from United Kingdom tabloid The Daily Star, which claimed that director Antoine Fuqua spoke with James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli about implementing a Black James Bond into the franchise.

Fuqua's representatives refuted the story, however, stating that no such conversation ever took place.

The 45-year-old Elba, best known for his roles in the critically acclaimed HBO series The Wire as well as Luther and Star Trek, is no stranger to the rumors.

Craig, 50, has stared as James Bond since he took over from Pierce Brosnan in 2005.

Craig will reprise the role of Bond, which he has inhabited since 2005, in the 25th Bond film which will be directed by Danny Boyle.

Of course, Fuqua's agent later said the quote was fiction.

"Running around in cars and ladies and martinis, who wants to do that?"
