The sanctions, announced Wednesday, allow the us government to target individuals and companies involved in corruption or human-rights abuses, which in this case include Turkey's justice and interior ministers.

"Since the beginning we have said that a solution can not be reached by using threatening language and sanctions", the minister added.

Before the meeting, Pompeo told reporters that he hoped Turkey would see that the sanctions were "a demonstration that we're very serious".

Davutoğlu said the US decision is a risky move and "incompatible with the most simple diplomatic courtesy and mutual respect". Pompeo also said he would be seeking the release of several local employees of the US diplomatic missions in Turkey.

"We consider this one of the many issues that we have with the Turks", Pompeo continued, but didn't elaborate.

Pompeo met with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in Singapore during a security conference in Southeast Asia.

Turkey's foreign ministry previously said it would retaliate against Washington's decision, calling it a "hostile stance".

Apple Becomes The World's First $1 Trillion Company

Philippines’ Duterte destroys smuggled Lamborghini, Porsche supercars
Crime doesn't pay, and it's especially true in the Philippines where the government takes a proactive stance on curbing smuggled cars.

The meeting was the first between the countries' officials after Ankara vowed it would respond to sanctions with retaliatory measures. "We have repeated this today".

Cavusoglu, however, said both the countries have agreed to work together.

The White House imposed sanctions on Turkey earlier this week over the detention of Brunson, an evangelical pastor from North Carolina.

Two Turkish employees of United States consulates in Turkey are also now in jail on terror charges, and another is under house arrest, while several Americans have been caught up in the crackdown that followed a failed 2016 coup.

Under the sanctions to be imposed by the Treasury Department, any property, or interest in property, belonging to Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gul or Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu within USA jurisdiction would be blocked.

Late last month, US President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that his country "will impose large sanctions on Turkey for their long time detainment of Pastor Andrew Brunson". The sanctions also prevent American citizens from doing any business with the two ministers.

Brunson faces up to 35 years in jail on charges of carrying out activities on behalf of two terror organisations - the group led by US-based Fethullah Gulen blamed for the July 2016 failed coup and the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
