Rand Paul invites Russian lawmakers to visit US

Senator Rand Paul is leading a USA delegation to Moscow in an effort to improve lines of communication with Russian Federation.

"My goal in coming to Russia is to say that we want to have open lines of communication", Senator Rand Paul (Republican-Kentucky) told journalists after a meeting with members of the International Affairs Committee in Russia's upper chamber of parliament, the Federation Council, on August 6.

"Engagement is vital to our national security and peace around the world", Paul said.

"I think this is incredibly important, " Paul said after the high-profile sit-down.

The senator and other members of Congress are now in Moscow meeting with government officials. The trip also demonstrates the continued determination of certain members of the Republican Party to defend the Trump administration's attempt at warmer relations with Russian Federation.

Paul led a small delegation of Americans in a meeting at the Federation Council, Russia's equivalent of the U.S. Senate, with senators from the worldwide relations committee. He was accompanied by Peter Goettler, Cato's president and chief executive, and Don Huffines, a Texas state senator who was chairman of Mr. Paul's presidential campaign in the state.

Trump administration announces $22b in fresh tariffs on China
But within days, Trump himself backed away from the deal, saying talks would "probably have to use a different structure". Chinese state media, reflecting the government's stance, has said China will not be cowed in the face of U.S. threats.

The head of the Russian Foreign Affairs Committee praised the Republican, saying other politicians would refer to talks with Russia as "toxic".

President Trump's similar invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin was met with concern from members of Congress. U.S. intelligence leaders all agree that the Russian threat to American elections, especially the upcoming midterms, are serious and ongoing. Additionally, the continued consensus of the U.S. intelligence community of a Russian desire to interfere in the midterms shows that Moscow remains a long-term risk to the U.S. political system.

Trump was criticized after the summit with Putin for supporting the Russian leader's denial Moscow was involved in meddling in the 2016 US election.

He was one of the very few on Capitol Hill to defend Trump after the Helsinki summit.

"The president believes that the next bilateral meeting with President Putin should take place after the Russian Federation witch hunt is over, so we've agreed that it will be after the first of the year", said National Security Adviser John Bolton in late July.

"We had general discussions about a lot of issues", Paul responded.
