Tears of joy as Georgia Hall wins Women's British Open

Hall carded a final round five-under 67 to win the Ricoh Women's British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes for her first victory on the LPGA Tour.

The large lead allowed Hall to enjoy the rousing reception that she received on her victory march up to the final hole, where a three-putt bogey was academic.

From one up at the 12th, Phatlum found herself one down by the time of her penultimate tee shot - a hole that would effectively kill her chances stone dead.

Ahead of a tournament in Abu Dhabi previous year, Hall hit a drive of 579 yards on Yas Marina race track, believed to be the world's longest drive by a female golfer.

Georgia was born during the 1996 Masters won by English golfer Nick Faldo at Augusta, Georgia.

Remarkably, his was Hall's first top-flight win as a professional, but with Wayne, the former plasterer who introduced her to the game as a seven year old, as her caddie, she looked like a veteran prevailing at her umpteenth major.

Hall was always chasing but was given hope when Phatlum bogeyed No. 8 to reduce her lead to one shot.

Hall is the first British victor since Scotland's Catriona Matthew, also at Lytham in 2009, and joins Laura Davies, who has four, Alison Nicholas (1997 US Women's Open) and Karen Stupples (2004 British Open) as English winners of a women's major. It was my goal when I was nine to win the British Open.

She went into the final round at Royal Lytham trailing Pornanong Phatlum by a shot and did not hit the front until the 16th hole, eventually going on to win the tournament by two shots.

Liverpool 3-1 Torino: Reds end pre-season with victory at Anfield
The Reds will start their Premier League campaign with a clash against West Ham United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon. He has been fit for two or three weeks, it's no problem but we didn't want to go with any risk.

So Yeon Ryu (70 on Sunday) finished third, four shots back of Hall. "I'm so happy she won".

"I was so confident coming into this event after previous year". Hall's missed birdie putt became irrelevant when Phatlum doubled.

"It was great to get so much support, I haven't really had that before because I play in America quite a bit", Hall said.

After not qualifying for the ANA Inspiration, Hall made the cut in the following two majors and then finished a brilliant tied-third in the Women's British Open at Kingsbarns before earning another top-10 finish in the Evian Championship.

"I think the big thing for me is just focus for every shot".

★ Now her Cinderella story is set to inspire other young sportspeople wanting to get a taste of world-class action. He turned in a dud, and a birdie on the 18th hole gave him another 73 to leave him 15 shots behind.

Also the 2014 and 2015 victor at TPC Twin Cities, the 57-year-old Perry matched Hale Irwin's tournament record of three victories in the final edition of the event that started in 1993 at Bunker Hills.

Champions - Kenny Perry won the 3M Championship one last time, closing with a 3-under 69 for a three-stroke victory in the event that is being replaced by the PGA Tour's 3M Open.
