Manchester United are prepared to make a last ditch attempt to sign Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, report SkySports.

Bouyed by Godin's desire, the Premier League side lodged an offer to his agent and waited to hear back from Atletico's board.

Sky Sports News broke that news about United's interest in Godin, but now Sky journalist Kaveh Solhekol has tweeted out stating that Atletico rejected the approach - seemingly nearly instantly.

Sky Sports are reporting that United are looking to sign Godin after being linked with moves for Jerome Boateng, Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld.

The Red Devils have spent the day frantically chasing a defender - but it appears they will end up with no-one coming through the door. It is understood that the defender is likely to sign a new contract with Los Rojiblancos instead.

Iran warn of ‘CONSEQUENCES’ as USA announces ban on oil exports
Signed in 2015, the landmark deal was meant to lift sanctions against Iran in return for curbs in its nuclear programme. The sanctions go back into place after Trump in July threatened Iranian President Hassan Rouhani .

It will come as little surprise that rival supporters found the news rather amusing with United's misfortune somewhat compiling their struggles this summer.

The 32-year-old has been one of the best central defenders in world football since joining Atletico from Villarreal in 2010 and he was once again a star performer for Uruguay at the World Cup this summer.

And now it seems increasingly unlikely that Mourinho will get the centre-back he so badly desired, it's a huge blow for the club ahead of their third season under the Portuguese.

The 55-year-old said: "The market closes today".

If there is to be any success in 2018-19, though, Godin won't have anything do with it. Have your say in the comments section below.
