To whip up a monstrous storm like the one chugging for the Carolinas you need a handful of ingredients - and Florence has them all.

"This will likely be the storm of a lifetime for portions of the Carolina coast", the National Weather Service spokesperson in Wilmington, North Carolina said Tuesday night, according to ABC News. Evacuations have been ordered for coastal residents, and the slow-moving storm could dump feet of rain in some places as it slogs through.

We'll keep you updated on this system in the coming days.

"The Charleston area now is expected to see at least 1-2 inches of rain over the next several days".

North Carolina utilities estimated that as many as 2.5 million state residents could be left without power, the state's Department of Public Safety said. In Charleston, South Carolina, a major interstate is reversing direction for roughly 100 miles and directing every lane inland in order to make it easier for people to leave.

The News & Observer reports that the storm's path shifted early Wednesday and it is now bearing down on southern North Carolina and northern SC, where it could dump up to 40 inches of rain in places.

President Trump says the Federal Emergency Management Agency and first responders are poised to help - but he also warned people to get out of the storm's path. Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the governors of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Maryland have declared states of emergency.

If the European model is true or the overall trend persists, University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy said it "is exceptionally bad news, as it smears a landfall out over hundreds of miles of coastline, most notably the storm surge. he rainfall has been and continues to be a very substantial threat over the entire area".

More than 400k evacuate SC as Florence approaches
Power outages in North Carolina have increased as a weakened and slower Hurricane Florence moves closer to the coast. A buoy off the North Carolina coast recorded waves almost 30 feet (9 meters) high as Florence churned toward shore.

At 11am local time on Wednesday (early Thursday AEST), the storm was located about 785km southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina.

"Get out of its way, don't play games with it, it's a big one, maybe as big as they've seen, and tremendous amounts of water", Trump said in a video posted on Twitter. "We'll handle it. We're ready, we're able".

And if Florence weren't enough, other storms out there are threatening people.

"It does look a bit similar to Harvey in a sense that it goes roaring into shore and then comes to a screeching stop", said MIT meteorology professor and hurricane expert Kerry Emanuel.

The storm is expected to hit the Carolinas hard later this week.

Forecasters have adjusted Hurricane Florence's projected path, saying that after it makes landfall, it is likely to take a more southerly route than expected.

Predictions now have the storm stalling and making a slight southward turn after it makes landfall. North and SC and Virginia declared emergencies earlier in the week.
