Hurricane Florence stalks US East Coast

As Hurricane Florence continues barreling toward the Carolinas, NASA has posted a remarkable video of the storm with winds approaching 130 miles per hour. "Now's the time to prepare".

Sustained winds Monday afternoon were up to 140 miles per hour. It was moving west at 13 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center.

NOAA's latest "probable" models see the center of the storm at the North Carolina coast at 2 a.m. EDT Friday and in central North Carolina at 2 a.m. Saturday.

"Residents and interests living along and near the Carolina coast and even up toward the Virginia Capes should closely monitor Florence and be ready to put their hurricane plan in place", Kottlowski said.

The governors of North and SC and Virginia declared states of emergency far ahead of the approaching storm.

Farther north into the Delmarva Peninsula, residents of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and NY and coastal and inland areas should also monitor the storm and prepare in case the forecast shifts to the north and east, officials said. "People are doing a pretty good job now". You could kill someone and you cannot frighten a hurricane.

President Trump met with federal disaster officials at the White House on Tuesday.

"It's not just the coast", Graham said. "This is probably the only exercise I get this week". "But we're not going to gamble with the lives of the people of SC".

By way of comparison, the maximum intensity of Hurricane Maria, the storm system which path of destruction left nearly 3,000 people dead in Puerto Rico, was 277.8 km/h, (150 knots), the NHC said. It will possibly weaken somewhat as it nears land - but that will hardly change the flooding threat.

Its centre will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday, the National Hurricane Centre said. That flooding could be exacerbated by increased wave height from Florence.

The storm is expected to produce 3 to 5 inches of rain across Martinique, Dominica, and Guadeloupe, with near 10 inches possible in isolated areas, forecasters said.

Astronaut Ricky Arnold, who is aboard the ISS, also snapped a picture of the storm, writing that the ISS crew is "thinking of those who will be affected" by its devastation. "When you stall a system like this and it moves real slow, some of that rainfall can extend well away from the center".

His remarks fell flat in Puerto Rico where islanders are continuing to struggle to recover a year after the Category 4 storm. There are now fewer tourists to send away. "I wish I had more time to sort through and grab more of the sentimental items".

In the Pacific, Hurricane Olivia triggered warnings for multiple Hawaiian islands, blowing westward and expected to arrive in the state as soon as late Tuesday or early Wednesday. After that point, it would be hard for people in the storm's path to either finish preparations or flee affected areas.

"The big problem is they are now talking about taking hurricane-force winds in as far as the Research Triangle", Watson said, referring to the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. The storm is expected to strengthen again over the next day or so. It is expected start affecting North Carolina and SC as early as September 13.

The governor of Hawaii, David Ige, has declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, the impacts of which will begin to be felt Tuesday night.

"As of right now, as of the 11 o'clock advisory, we don't anticipate any significant issues from Hurricane Florence, " said Chatham Emergency Management Agency Director Dennis Jones at a press conference Monday afternoon.

"That's good news and bad news", he said.

"Some additional strengthening is expected today, and Helene is forecast to become a major hurricane by tonight".

A category 4 hurricane has winds in the 130 to 156 miles per hour range, according to the NHC. Well-built homes can lose walls and roofs. Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. Electricity and power can go out for days.

Slow-moving storms like Harvey are getting more common.

The Category 4 storm's approach led to a series of schedule adjustments Tuesday for teams in the Carolinas and Virginia. At that level, it would still cause "devastating damage", according to the Saffir-Simpson scale.

For many, the challenge could be finding a safe refuge: If Florence slows to a crawl just off the coast, it could carry torrential rains up into the Appalachian mountains, causing flash floods, mudslides and other risky weather across a wide area.

"Don't concentrate on the exact forecast track of Hurricane #Florence". There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect for the storm.
