A 26-year old man was tragically killed by what experts believe is the first fatal shark attack in MA in more than 80 years.

At Newcomb Hollow Beach, the site of Saturday's incident, beach goers are greeted by a sign warning them to "Be Shark Smart", according to a local CBS affiliate.

A 61-year-old man was severely injured on August 15 after fighting off a shark about 4 miles away from Saturday's attack. The man was standing about 30 yards offshore when he was bitten. Almost 40 years prior, in 1897, a man fishing south of Lynn was killed.

He said others on the beach attempted to make a tourniquet while others frantically called the emergency services.

Statistics on fatal, unprovoked attacks in Massachusetts are rare because there isn't enough data, Gregory Skomal, a senior scientist at the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries, told the Times in July. In that 2017 study, 88 people reported unprovoked contact with sharks worldwide, of which five were fatal, according to the chamber. Lytton suffered deep lacerations on his leg and torso but was able to break free by punching the shark in the gills.

Saturday's incident was the second shark attack off of Cape Cod this summer, though multiple sharks have been spotted in the area in recent months, according to WBUR.
