Kipchoge smashes marathon world record in Berlin

With three pacemakers in front of him, Kipchoge ran the first kilometre in just 2:43 - gapping the rest of the elite field immediately.

Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge set a new marathon world record in Berlin on Sunday, smashing the previous best as he clocked 2 hours 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Simply put, Kipchoge's performance today in the German capital is one of the greatest athletic achievements in world history. Unless Kipchoge himself surpasses his mark from Sunday, the record may never be broken. The celebration continued with Kipchoge taking pictures and embracing fans while the next runner would cross the finish line four minutes and 44 seconds later.

He missed the mythical mark by just 25 seconds.

"My target was to break he course record and improve on my personal best and I am happy I did it", said Cherono, who retained her title for her third success in Berlin.

The 33-year-old broke the previous world record set in Berlin by fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto in 2014 by 1 minute, 18 seconds.

Fellaini is also infuriatingly effective at his best, as Watford found out to their cost in the first half especially. De Gea will have busier days than this, of course, though his contribution at Vicarage Road was still significant.

"Congratulations Eliud Kipchoge for breaking the world record at the Berlin marathon 2018". By 5k, Kipchoge was already nine seconds ahead of the field when he split 14:24 (2:01:31 pace), and by halfway (61:06) his margin was a big 1:01 over Wilson Kipsang. The world record is no stranger to Berlin as it has been set in this race in the last six times that it had been lowered before Sunday.

The 33-year-old Olympic marathon champion had the world record in the bag with plenty of room left to run. According to the IAAF, that is the largest improvement on the marathon record since Derek Clayton cut two minutes and 23 seconds off the world record in 1967.

Kipchoge completed half distance in 61:06, leaving him well on course for the record - even though he raced the final 17km without a pacemaker.

Gladys Cherono won the women's race in 2:18:11, a new women's record for the Berlin marathon. The Kenyan finished ahead of Ethiopians Ruti Aga and Tirunesh Dibaba.

While Kipchoge clearly stole the show in Berlin, the depth of the women's race is certainly noteworthy.
