Raw chicken causing Salmonella outbreak in Pennsylvania and 28 states

A salmonella outbreak likely related to raw chicken has spread across the country, sickening at least five people in IL since the spring, officials announced Wednesday.

The source of the raw chicken is unclear from lab tests, and no single common supplier has been identified.

The outbreak strain was identified in live chickens and many types of raw chicken products, indicating it might be widespread in the chicken industry.

The CDC said on Wednesday that 21 people had been hospitalized but no deaths had yet been reported. The CDC is working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate the strain and work with the chicken industry to reduce contamination.

The CDC has called the rise in infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria "a global threat", saying at least 23,000 people die yearly and 2 million become infected in the US alone. In Minnesota, three people have reported getting sick.

Five cases of multi-drug resistant salmonella infantis illness has reported by the Illinois Dept. of Public Health.

Most people infected with salmonella get diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within 3 days of exposure.

The CDC cautioned doctors that this strain resists the effects of common antibiotics, and said numerous patients also had urinary tract infections.

This outbreak is a reminder to follow food safety guidelines.

Don't spread germs from raw chicken around food preparation: Don't wash raw poultry before cooking; germs can splash around your kitchen. Use a separate cutting board for raw chicken and other raw meats if possible. Cook chicken to a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit to kill harmful bacteria.

"Always handle raw chicken carefully and cook it thoroughly to prevent food poisoning", the CDC said.

The investigation is ongoing and CDC will provide more information as it becomes available.
