A clinical trial, launched Monday, will evaluate the impact of mymobility - an app that uses Apple Watch to connect patients with their surgical care teams - on patient outcomes.

More than a million knee and hip replacements happen every year in the USA, according to Zimmer Biomet. Apple's latest watch has FDA approved EKG monitoring inside along with fall detection. The study is launching today and has the possibility to enroll as many as 10,000 patient participants in the United States. Researchers will combine patient-reported feedback with continuous health and activity data from Apple Watch to provide new insights into the power of the Zimmer Biomet mymobility app to impact the standard of care for these common surgeries. At first, the app will be offered only to those who subscribe, although it eventually will be made available to all Apple Watch users. The data will be used by healthcare professionals to determine why some patients recover faster from these surgeries than others.

A new app for the iPhone and Apple Watch wants to improve communication between patients and surgeons before and after knee and hip surgery. "We are proud to enable knee and hip replacement patients to use their own data and share it with their doctors seamlessly, so that they can participate in their care and recovery in a way not previously possible through traditional in-person visits". Both companies are also cooperating on a clinical study.

The multi-year study in collaboration with Apple Inc will allow doctors and their teams to gauge better how well patients are following prescribed physiotherapy or regimes ahead of surgery or recovering afterwards.

Indeed, it's another way Apple is wielding its smartwatch as a more serious health tool.

Last year, Apple also partnered with Stanford Medicine in another study to find out how Apple Watch could be utilized in detecting irregular heartbeats. Citing the aging of the population, the figures representing the people getting knee and hip replacement surgeries is bound to increase. Apple also donated 1000 Watches for another study on eating disorders.
