Australia Offers Rare National Apology to Victims of Child Sex Abuse

Scott Morrison said that abuse had taken place “anywhere a predator thought they could get away with it”

Scott Morrison said that abuse had taken place “anywhere a predator thought they could get away with it”

The formal apology comes nearly a year after the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse uncovered the shocking extent of abuse of children by clergy, orphanage supervisors, and others in positions of power.

From December, the government will report each year for the next five years, and then again in 10 years, on the progress of the recommendations.

"Today, Australia confronts a trauma, an abomination, hiding in plain sight for far too long", Morrison told parliament in an emotional televised speech on Monday. Again, today, we say sorry.

The Prime minister also noted the work government was doing in response to the royal commission, especially the national redress scheme.

"We are ensuring non-government and government organisations are supported to promote child safety, better prevent and respond to child sexual abuse and improve treatment and support for survivors of abuse", Ms Goward said. More than 8,000 people shared their experiences of abuse with the commission.

22, offered a rare national apology, only the second since 2008, to victims of institutional child sexual abuse and their families, bringing some survivors to tears.

In its final report, the commission estimated the number of child victims in the tens of thousands, saying their abusers were "not just a few rotten apples".

Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems.

The Catholic Church, which was repeatedly singled out by the commission, issued a "renewed" apology on Monday after apologizing a year ago.

Later, the prime minister also apologised to the hundreds of child sex abuse victims that had gathered in Parliament House for the occasion.

Some senior members of the church in Australia have been prosecuted in relation to the abuse. He has denied the allegations.

For many Australians there will still be questions about how the child sex abuse and cover-ups took place.

The country has been shocked by revelations of the systemic and prolonged sexual assault of children in religious and government schools, institutions and sporting clubs.

Victims are eligible to apply for payments of up to A$150,000 (£80,000; $106,000) each.

Between 1950 and 1965, 259 boys and 51 girls were sent to Catholic institutions in the West and South of Australia.
