Santorum Criticizes Trump's Gianforte Praise: 'This Is Not Helpful, It's Not Good'

"Why lionize him in front of the crowd, why say he's your guy?" After the incident, Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault and was sentenced to community service and anger management training.

While speaking at a rally in Montana, US President Donald Trump praised the state's Congressman Greg Gianforte, specifically for his ability to perform a body slam, referring to the notorious incident involving a Guardian journalist, which happened in 2017. Still, after Trump called Gianforte "a tremendous person and a tough cookie" at a rally Thursday in Missoula, Mont., Jacobs felt "shock and dismay".

Cuomo said Trump should have mocked Gianforte instead for his "pathetic display", and he pointed to Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James bucking up his teammates as a role model for the president. He said he was anxious at first the Gianforte would lose, then added: "I said, 'Wait a minute, I know Montana pretty well". Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi was allegedly killed in a Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2, 2018. He also donated $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Then, when Saudi Arabia claimed on Friday that Khashoggi died during a fist fight at its Istanbul consulate, Trump told reporters he found the explanation "credible" -despite the US intelligence community and lawmakers on Capitol Hill, including members of his own party, viewing that narrative with skepticism.

In late October 2018, as the ugly story of journalist and United States resident Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance and suspected brutal murder at the behest of Saudi Arabia's crown prince continued to unfold, the Trump administration and its allies appeared to brush off any sense of urgency about ongoing investigations.

Guardian US editor John Mulholland issued a statement on Trump's Gianforte remarks.

He added: "We hope decent people will denounce these comments and that the president will see fit to apologise for them".

In praising Gianforte, the strategist noted, Trump "essentially endorsed a crime".

"If you think the press is the enemy of the American people, why wouldn't you praise people who beat up journalists", tweeted Guardian writer Jason Wilson. He wished that the president had surprised him, he said.

Trump's comments drew condemnation from The Guardian, other journalists, USA lawmakers, a spokesman for Britain's prime minister and people on Twitter.

This isn't the first time Trump has joked about, seemingly encouraged or cast aside violence against the media.
