Dyson to build new electric car in Singapore

Chief executive Jim Rowan confirmed the location of the factory just over a year after Dyson, best-known for its bag-less vacuum cleaners, announced its £2bn plan to build an electric auto.

Mr Rowan said of the new factory: "We will begin construction in December and it will be completed in 2020, meeting our project timeline".

British tech company Dyson announced on Tuesday its plans to build an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Singapore, as part of its plans to expand into automotive.

Carmakers are stepping up investment in electric vehicles in response to ever-tightening emissions restrictions and penalties on the use of internal combustion engines, with some countries already promising outright bans.

The new manufacturing facility is part of the $3.2 billion investment towards the company's new electric auto.

Dyson now employs 1100 people in Singapore where it already makes electric motors.

Dyson is looking to exploit its ability in solid-state battery technology and electric motors that are found in its innovative vacuum cleaners and other products.

"Our RDD teams at both the Singapore Technology Centre and the Advanced Manufacturing Centre have developed world-leading knowledge and represent Dyson at its best", Rowan said.

72-Year-Old Man Stoned To Death By Thug Monkeys
The police in India have declared a troop of monkeys wanted for stoning a man to death in the northern part of the country. Mr Singh's family have lodged a formal complaint with Indian police who have recorded the death as an accident.

"Singapore also offers access to high-growth markets as well as an extensive supply chain and a highly skilled workforce".

Rowan also highlighted the availability of engineering talent in Singapore, in spite of its "comparatively high cost base".

Dyson told AFP in an interview earlier this year that electric cars were already available to order.

But Singapore welcomed the decision, which Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said will see vehicle assembly return to the city-state for the first time since the 1980s.

According to the FT, Dyson is bullish that Brexit isn't to blame for taking the EV's manufacture overseas.

The company said that its 2017 operating profit surged by nearly one third to around £800 million (S$1.4 billion), aided by fast growth in China, India, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

Separately, Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing said in a Facebook post that the company's decision "testifies to Singapore's attractiveness as a base for investments in innovation". Opening a manufacturing plant in Singapore isn't out of the ordinary for the company.
