New 'Halloween' Has A Record Breaking Opening Weekend

Earlier in the month, superhero movie "Venom" was the biggest-ever October debut, with $80.3 million.

Universal's "Halloween", the 11th film in the horror franchise, beat expectations and earned an estimated $77.5 million in North America this weekend.

Plus, the critics have liked it, the film now at 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The new horror flick, co-produced by Blumhouse and Miramax, cost only $10 million to make.

"The movie used to open with a scene of my granddaughter jogging through Haddonfield and ending up in her bedroom, opening up a louvred closet door, and pulling a bare bulb light bulb to pick her sweater for the day", she shares.

This is to say: Halloween's success is a big deal and will hopefully show that audiences would love to see more female protagonists over 55, and more female-led horror, and more over-55-female-led-horror!

Jose Mourinho 'favourite for Real Madrid job'
Without their all-time record goalscorer, Real Madrid have managed just one goal in their last five outings in all competitions. It's Real Madrid's worst start a season since 2001 - while Juventus are enjoying their best ever start to a Serie A campaign.

Netflix cancels Marvel's Luke Cage
After clearing his name, Luke Cage has become a celebrity on the streets of Harlem with a reputation as bulletproof as his skin. It's always hard to gauge the popularity and performance of a Marvel Netflix series - or any Netflix series, for that matter.

Universal executives could be excused for a bit of gloating - they produced Halloween for a microscopic $10 million (Sh1 billion). A Star is Born continues to have wonderful legs, jumping above Venom and staying in second place with only a 32.2% drop from last weekend. Star came in second place this weekend with $18.9 million.

After all, it's no mistake that some of the final images of the film are the effigy of Michael Myers being burned away, while the young female "hero" (Allyson) now holds claim to the bloody (and phallic) symbol of Michael's power (his killing knife). The coming-of-age drama grossed $249,500 during the weekend for a $62,375 per-screen average, with the studio planning to expand next weekend after the strong opening.

Rounding out the top 5 are "Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween" and "First Man", which earned $9.7 and $8.5 million, respectively.

While Halloween H20 was initially conceived to be one big 20th-anniversary celebration, the film hasn't lasted the test of time.

The surprising returns for "Halloween" mark another win for Hollywood, which is up 10.6% from the same point previous year, according to comScore.
