Mega Millions, Powerball jackpots reach almost $1 billion combined

Free Mega Millions tickets are available Tuesday ahead of one of the game's largest drawings.

It's the second biggest Mega Millions drawing ever, and the third biggest lottery jackpot in USA history.

The Mega Millions jackpot has reached $654 million, the second largest in Mega Millions history.

More than 73,000 Mega Millions tickets won smaller prizes in Virginia from Friday's drawing, including a $10,000 victor that was bought in Manassas. The last Powerball jackpot, which totaled $245.6 million, was won August 11 by a man in Staten Island, New York. It's only $2 million less than the March 2012 record of $656 million. "With a little luck, we may still break that record by Tuesday".

The chance of matching all six numbers is one in 302 million.

The cash option, which is favored by almost all winners, is $372 million.

Three other Mega Millions jackpots have been won this year: $451 million on January 5 (Florida), $533 million on March 30 (New Jersey) and $142 million on May 4 (Ohio).

Wednesday's Powerball jackpot is nothing to sneeze at either. More than a billion tickets were sold before that single drawing.
