Megyn Kelly doesn’t understand why blackface Halloween costumes are offensive

Megyn Kelly is facing the heat after sharing her thoughts on certain Halloween costumes.

Fellow panelists Melissa Rivers, Jenna Bush Hager and Jacob Soboroff - in their defense - appeared fully aware of the inappropriateness of darkening your skin for a costume, although they didn't call out Kelly for excusing it.

This is perhaps the most controversial statement Kelly has made since joining NBC and debuting on Today, where she took over the 9am slot after the network chose to cancel previous hosts Al Roker and Tamron Hall.

With Halloween rapidly approaching, morning news networks have started discussing costume dos and don'ts, and we have yet to get through a segment without some sort of reflection on the "political correctness" debate. "Isn't the whole goal of Halloween to dress up and pretend you're something other than yourself?" ". I feel like it's so absurd". Who comes up with these rules?... Needless to say, Megyn Kelly TODAY viewers with access to Twitter (and plenty of others) were quick to answer Kelly's question for her on social media. "Because you do get in trouble if you are a white person who puts on blackface for Halloween or a black person who puts on white face for Halloween. Like - when I was a kid that was OK as long as you were a character", Kelly said.

Not everyone on the panel agreed with Kelly.

In Chicago, Reyna Ortiz said being transgender for 25 years has prepared her for setbacks such as the Trump administration proposal.

Still, everyone seemed to agree with Rivers when she said, "If you think it's offensive, it probably is". "Normal people kind of know where that line is". But when you put shoe polish or whatever else on your skin to approximate what you think people of color look like, you are equating blackness with Otherness.

"It is such a problem that Megyn Kelly can make a pro-blackface argument without anyone there to meaningfully pushback", cultural critic Kimberly Nicole Foster wrote.

Speaking on TODAY with her fellow panelists Melissa Rivers, Jenna Bush Hager, and guest host Jacob Soboroff, the former Fox News host commented on the controversy surrounding "Real Housewives of New York" star Luann de Lesseps, who actually darkened her skin a year ago as part of her Diana Ross costume.

"I've seen comments that blast NBC for not having a black person on the panel, but honestly, minstrel shows and blackface were a popular form of extremely racist mass entertainment in America through the early 20th century. It's not like she's walking around like that in general".
