Nintendo Switch Just Outsold Gamecube's Lifetime Sales

By passing the GameCube, the Switch has now already sold two of Nintendo's previous home consoles despite being on sale for less than two years.

For the sake of comparison, 7.23 million Switch consoles were sold during last year's holiday period, meaning that this year's sales would have to be much higher than those seen just 12 months ago. By way of The Verge, we now know Nintendo's latest financial data, which includes the new milestone of 22.86 million units sold for the Switch.

Nintendo's earnings were supported by the 42 million Switch games sold in April-September, versus 22 million in the same period a year earlier, with upcoming titles generating a buzz among games fans including next month's Pokemon: Let's Go titles and December's Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo has shared an update about sales of Switch hardware, and some of the platform's biggest games. They have sold 5 million Switch consoles in the first six months of their fiscal year, with 3.2 million being sold in the recent quarter. Yeah, it's got a few killer titles - Super Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart.

Some other interesting nuggets of information in Nintendo's October 30 earnings release involved software sales for some of their first party titles.

The Wii and DS are the runaway winners at present with an incredible 101.63m and 154.02m units sold respectively; the Game Boy sold 118.69m units, the Game Boy Advance 81.51m, 3DS sold 73.53m, the NES 61.91m units, the SNES shifted 49.10m, and the Nintendo 64 is next to be caught with 32.93m units sold. The Switch is missing out on one of the strongest third-party lineups in years, including blockbusters like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, which won't be available on Nintendo's device due to its limited graphical power. The sales surpassed 500,000 units in Japan in four weeks - outpacing Sony's PlayStation 4 over the same time period - and surpassed 1 million units in Japan by June 25.
