CSKA Moscow fans injured in escalator accident in Rome

Disturbing footage captured fans hurling down an escalator at the metro station in central Rome after a collapse caused it to speed up out-of-control.

Excited soccer fans may have caused an escalator in a Roman metro station to malfunction on Tuesday, leaving at least 20 people injured, Italian media reports via the BBC.

Video footage on social media showed the escalator accelerate and send passengers crushing into each other at the bottom, some throwing themselves across to another escalator, which was moving at a normal speed.

Most of those aboard the escalator were CSKA Moscow soccer fans, according to local news outlet La Repubblica. One of the fans had a foot partially severed in the crush, Italian newspaper Repubblica reported.

A number of people were seriously injured in the incident.

The station was closed immediately and four ambulances were parked at one of the entrances.

Media reports said witnesses spoke of football fans, seemingly drunk, jumping and dancing on the escalator just before its collapse, but supporters denied this ever happened.
