Thousands Unite for Annual Breast Cancer Walk

Most Americans know about Breast Cancer Awareness Month by the hard-to-miss pink paraphernalia that signifies solidarity - including the breast cancer pink ribbon, rah-rah slogans like "Think Pink", and other catchphrases that suggest breast cancer is something you can "survive" and "beat".

Registration begins at noon and the walk steps off at 2 p.m., rain or shine. Survivors and supporters walked around the concourse Saturday morning.

Human whoopie cushions, fairies with wigs and even dogs dressed in tutus were among the thousands of people and animals dipped in pink at Auckland's Domain yesterday - all supporting a vision for zero deaths from breast cancer. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer among women in India.

Gloria Kruzic has been involved in organizing the event for several years - seven or eight by her own recollection - for Days Creek's volleyball team. She said: "The charity is very close to my heart. There is so much money and emphasis on awareness, but we need more research to extend my life".
