Subtropical Storm Oscar forms in Atlantic; no threat to land

Oscar is the 15th named storm this season, the 7th storm to be subtropical. The storm is moving west at 12 miles per hour.

Forecasters at the Miami-based hurricane center say Oscar "is expected to accelerate quickly toward the northeast through the middle of the week".

Oscar became a tropical storm Saturday and was designated the eighth hurricane this season in the 5 p.m. advisory.

No coastal watches of warnings are in effect.

The tropical depression that would eventually become Hurricane Kate formed southeast of the Bahamas on November 8th. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from the center.

Hurricane Kate in 1985 formed on November 15 and did $300 million worth of damage and killed 15 people, according to reports.

The storm also hit Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia.
