President Donald Trump said Monday the US would begin "cutting off, or substantially reducing" aid to three Central American nations over a migrant caravan heading to the USA southern border.

As the migrants continued their northward march about 900 miles from the USA border, Trump tweeted that, "Sadly, it looks like Mexico's Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan".

"Sadly, it looks like Mexico's Police and Military are unable to stop the Caravan heading to the Southern Border of the United States", he added.

He asserted without evidence in his flurry of tweets that "unknown Middle Easterners" were among those in the caravan.

"We will now begin cutting off, or substantially reducing, the massive foreign aid" that the United States provides to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, he said.

The president went on to say you can "blame the Democrats for not giving us the votes to change our pathetic immigration laws".

After stopping a group of migrants who tried to enter Mexico on Friday, Mexican authorities said they would willingly permit migrants to enter the country if they had the required documents and visas or were applying for asylum.

Trump's announcement came as thousands of migrants continue their journey in Southern Mexico en route to the US.

Thousands of mostly Honduran migrants crowded into the Mexican border city of Tapachula over the weekend after trekking on foot from the Guatemalan border, defying threats by Trump that he will close the US-Mexico border if they advanced, as well as warnings from the Mexican government.

He apparently sees the caravan as a winning issue for Republicans a little over two weeks ahead of midterm elections.

The large group have been gathering numbers as they travel across Central America.

Another group of 1,000 entered Guatemala from Honduras on Sunday, rushing north trying to catch up to the caravan and some 1,000 or more were at the Guatemala-Mexico border trying to pass through.

Mexico's president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who takes office December 1, said the United States should welcome all migrants. Many migrants said they were fleeing a toxic mix of violence, poverty and corruption in Central America.

Mexico's government has said throughout the past week that it would register the migrants and process requests for asylum.

He said Monday all of those involved are from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

The current migrant caravan has tested the limits of American patience.
