The plane, which is believed to be a North American Aviation T-6 Texan painted in German military insignia, crashed along the 101 Freeway in South California yesterday afternoon, CBS reports. "Fortunately, I was able to not hurt anybody - other than the airplane".

Starling said the pilot suffered only some singed hair from the resulting fire.

Images on social media from Cynthia Alvarez showed the plane in flames, moments after it crashed.

The plane struck the center divider of US 101 and the pilot, the only occupant, was safely removed before flames consumed much of the aircraft, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The pilot, whose name was Rob flies professionally for Alaska Airlines, was out on a training exercise, Rushing said. "I'm guessing it was just a very fortunate set of circumstances".

Video shows traffic was backed up for miles on the northbound side of the 101.

A spokesperson for Van Nuys Airport later said the plane was an AT-6 aircraft from its Condor Squadron vintage flying club.

The pilot's name has not been released.
