The opening ceremony for this year's BlizzCon concluded with an announcement for Diablo Immortal, a new mobile-only Diablo set between the second and third games.

"Diablo was supposed to be Blizzard's first shot on goal into the big global mobile game market", Jefferies analyst Timothy O'Shea wrote noting the criticism from Blizzard's PC fanbase. Blizzard Entertainment's sole Diablo announcement at the convention, revealing the mobile game Diablo Immortal, was met with vocal ire by portions of its fanbase, partially because the game simply wasn't the true sequel that fans had been hoping for - and, fans assumed, had been teased for months. Anonymous sources tell Kotaku that Blizzard had originally planned to end the BlizzCon 2018 keynote by confirming Diablo IV's existence, but this was scrapped at the eleventh hour for unknown reasons. Apparently, Diablo 4 is in development, but the team wasn't ready to commit to an announcement as the game has changed "drastically" over the past four years and may continue to evolve. The fan backlash against the game was strong enough that Activision Blizzard's stock price was impacted. We've heard from the hardcore Diablo fans that feel spurned, the ex-Blizzard producer that thinks Blizzard dug its own grave, and the developers themselves that have continually stressed that multiple Diablo projects are in the works.

"Some of them are going to take longer than others, but we may have some things to show you later this year", Camel said. The game's cinematic and gameplay trailers were besieged with dislikes on YouTube, and the Diablo subreddit is awash with high-upvote posts calling Immortal "a slap in the face" and accusing Blizzard of being "out of touch with their fans". Last Friday, Diablo III also came to the Nintendo Switch.

Morgan Stanley's Brian Nowak suggested "Diablo Immortal" could eventually have more than 200 million monthly active users, and that it could generate annual earnings of as much as $2.52 a share. Blizzard is working with NetEase on the development of the game, and NetEase is known for free-to-play games.
