Hof was found dead last month after a weekend of parties celebrating his 72nd birthday.

Hof gained his claim-to-fame by owning several brothels in Nevada, the only state where prostitution is legal.

He then won the 36th District by a landslide in the safe Republican seat, defeating Democratic candidate Lesia Romanov with 68.3 per cent of the vote.

In a June interview from one of his brothels, Hof said his political fortunes had parallels with those of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Besides his notoriety as a brothel owner, Hof wrote a book called "The Art of the Pimp" and was seen on the HBO adult reality show "Cathouse", which followed the lives of brothel workers.

Dennis Hof, unfortunately, won't be able to serve the people of Nevada - 'cause he's dead and all - so the Silver State's running good old-fashioned want ads to find a replacement.

The snag is, Mr. Hof is dead and buried a few weeks before the election. The Love Ranch brothel that Hof owned became notorious as the place where former Laker Lamar Odom was found unconscious in 2015.

Hours earlier he had attended a rally for his campaign to win a seat in the Nevada state assembly in GOP-popular District 36. He continued the festivities at his brothel with reality television personality Flavor Flav and porn-film actor Ron Jeremy, who found Hof dead the next morning. This year, he ran as a Republican and earned backing from former Trump advisor Roger Stone and tax-cut activist Grover Norquist.

Around 20 brothels operate in Nevada - the only U.S. state where prostitution is legal.

He upended Nevada politics this summer when he ousted an incumbent Republican lawmaker in a primary, celebrating at an election night party with "Hollywood Madam" Heidi Fleiss.

He said he faced political retribution this year in the form of an anti-brothel push and regulatory problems.

This was despite (or perhaps because of) posters at voting stations stating Hof had died.
