Hundreds of community members gathered outside an elementary school in Wisconsin to remember three Girl Scouts and a parent who were killed in a hit-and-run crash.

Girl Scouts chief executive Sylvia Acevedo paid tribute to the girls and the woman in a statement on Sunday, saying "our hearts are broken" over the tragedy. One girl survived and was in critical condition Saturday night.

The fourth-graders from the Chippewa Falls School District were picking up trash along County Highway P as part of a community service project when they were struck.

They were all wearing bright safety vests and were accompanied by several adults, the relative said.

Eliopoulos says approximately 15 people were there at the time of the incident.

Monday morning, counselors, psychologists, therapy dogs and faith leaders will again be at the two elementary schools where the victims were students. Families did the same at Southview Elementary School, the other school in Chippewa Falls the girls attended, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

Eliopoulos says it's a "difficult time for our students, families and staff", and that the district will provide support "for as long as needed". Other members of the troop were picking up trash from the opposite shoulder. A phone number for Treu could not immediately be found, and it was unclear if he has an attorney. The driver was identified as an adult male, Colton Treu age 21 of Chippewa Falls.

But Cecily Spallees, a personal care attendant at a group home near the crash site, said drivers often go too fast there. He is being held on 13 possible charges: four counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle, four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, four counts of hit-and-run involving death and one count hit-and-run involving great bodily harm.

"I'm always telling one of my residents that he shouldn't walk this strip at night", Spallees said.

The three Girl Scouts who were killed in the crash have been identified as Jayna Kelley, 9, of Lake Hallie, Autum Helgeson, 10, of Lake Hallie, Haylee Hinkle, 10, of Lafayette.
