Jeff Sessions resigns as attorney general at Trump's request

Since Sessions stepped aside, Trump has frequently railed against his attorney general in public.

The departure creates uncertainty at the Justice Department, but also for special counsel Robert Mueller's office, which is investigating allegations of Russian interference in the U.S. election that delivered a Trump White House.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is expected to remain in charge of the Russian Federation investigation and special counsel Robert Mueller.

According to a copy of the resignation letter, Sessions was asked by Trump to resign.

Trump announced on Twitter that Matthew G. Whitaker, the Attorney General's chief of staff, will take over as interim Attorney General until a permanent replacement is nominated.

Embattled Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned from his office on Wednesday morning after President Donald Trump requested he do so.

President Trump abruptly announced on Twitter Wednesday that Jeff Sessions is no longer the USA attorney general. Appearing on CNN in July 2017, shortly before he began working for Sessions, Whitaker argued, "I could see a scenario where Jeff Sessions is replaced with a recess appointment, and that attorney general doesn't fire Bob Mueller, but he just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt". "It's very sad", Trump told The Hill in September.

Trump has long expressed frustration with Sessions over his recusal from the Justice Department's Russian Federation investigation. "If he would have recused himself before the job, I would have said, 'Thanks, Jeff, but I'm not going to take you'".

Rosenstein, who normally would have become acting AG, is in charge of Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation.

Whitaker is a former U.S. Attorney and 2014 Senate candidate in Iowa who joined the Justice Department last fall. "In my time at Attorney General, we have restored and upheld the rule of law -- a glorious tradition that each of us has a responsibility to safeguard".
