One person was killed and two others were injured in a rush-hour stabbing rampage in downtown Melbourne Friday, that saw police shoot a knife-wielding suspect near a burning vehicle.

Video has emerged of a man lunging at police with what appears to be a knife before being shot in Melbourne's Bourke St.

Speaking at the scene, Superintendent David Clayton said: "Police quickly responded to the incident".

Police said officers "initially responded to a report of a auto on fire" in the city centre at 4:20 pm local time, but discovered at the scene that members of the public had been stabbed.

Two other victims have been taken to hospital with injuries. Their genders, ages, and condition are not known.

"Three people have been stabbed, unfortunately one is deceased at the scene, two other victims are now in hospital", police Superintendent David Clayton told reporters at the scene.

The buildings surrounding the incident were put into lockdown, and police blocked off sections of Bourke and Swanston streets.

Police are not looking for anyone further at this early stage.

Another said they heard "what sounded like a bomb and gun shot".

'Police response was swift and overwhelming. "The area has been cordoned off", police said.

Another witness said: "Big fire".

"Police are now at an incident on Bourke St in the CBD".

Neil McKeller, who works at Hylands Bookshop on Bourke Street, told Guardian Australia he heard a loud explosion and then gunshots.

"I really wanted to help but I was in shock, I didn't know what to do".
