Americans created history on Tuesday when they elected two Muslim women - Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib - to Congress. A Muslim woman from Detroit has won the congressional seat long held by Democratic Rep. John Conyers, who stepped down amid sexual harassment claims by former staffers.

Rep. Ilhan Omar, DFL-Minneapolis, is a rising star in the Democratic Party who has seen strong support from students and young voters. She ran a grass roots campaign that took on the "Queens Democratic Party machine" and championed progressive proposals, such as the abolition of the Immigration Customs Enforcement (Ice), a single-payer health care plan and tuition-free college. She spent four years in Dadaab until her family was cleared to emigrate to the US.

Although her election was officially announced on Tuesday, she was elected unopposed as no one came forward to challenge Rashida in another deeply Democratic district.
