The officials searched the pair's belongings and confiscated their passports.

CPJ accused the authorities of sending a false tweet from Quintal's personal account saying that they had been released and making several attempts to access her email account.

The Mail & Guardian said that according to Mabaya, there are a number of issues that the South African High Commissioner will want to be addressed by Tanzanian authorities. It is now abundantly clear to anyone who followed the latest developments that Tanzanian journalists work in a climate of fear of intimidation.

Tanzanian authorities have freed two Committee to Protect Journalists staff, Ms Muthoki Mumo and Angela Quintal, who were detained in an unknown location.

Earlier, the Committee to Protect Journalists had called on Tanzanian authorities to immediately release its staffers‚ Sub-Saharan Africa representative Muthoki Mumo and Africa Programme coordinator Angela Quintal.

CPJ Executive Director Joel Simon expressed appreciation to journalists, media, press freedom organisations and government officials who spoke out about Quintal and Mumo's detention. Simon noted in particular the assistance of the South African and Kenyan governments.

" Ron Desantis and congratulated him on what we expect will be him as the Governor of the great State of Florida ", said Gillum. DeSantis , a Harvard-educated lawyer, has said that he will appoint conservative justices who are "solid constitutionalists".

Quintal tweeted before 1am on Tuesday morning that she and her colleague had been released.

Immigration spokesperson Ally Mtanda told The Citizen that the department had arrested the two journalists and questioned them, saying, "they arrived in the country on October 31, 2018 through the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam and they said the objective of their trip was normal visit".

"We are concerned for the safety of our colleagues Angela Quintal and Muthoki Mumo, who were detained while legally visiting Tanzania".

Both of their social media accounts were suspended after the dubious post on Quintal's account.

Other freedoms are also under pressure, with a powerful Dar-es-Salaam official last week announcing an anti-gay witch-hunt to track down people suspected of engaging in homosexuality, which is illegal in Tanzania under British colonial-era laws.
