Annabel Croft I think Rafael Nadal will play the ATP Finals

Nadal withdrew from the ATP Finals on Monday, citing an abdominal injury, and announced he was having arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle.

In a post on social media, 17-time Grand Slam champion Nadal wrote: "It has been a complicated year, very good at the tennis level when I was able to play, and at the same time very bad as far as injuries are concerned".

That's because the man he overtook, Rafael Nadal, is done for 2018.

"Unfortunately, I had an abdominal problem in Paris last weekend and I also have a problem with an ankle join that needs to be dealt with in the operating room today".

Novak Djokovic will face Alexander Zverev and Marin Cilic in the round-robin stage at the ATP Finals, while Roger Federer will get the chance to exact revenge on Kevin Anderson in London.

An abdominal problem forced Nadal to abort his planned comeback from a knee injury at the Paris Masters as he ceded the world number one ranking to Novak Djokovic and he has not recovered in time for London.

The Cliffsofmoher was euthanised on the track after fracturing his shoulder early in the Melbourne Cup . Only Bobby Lewis and Harry White have won more with four victories apiece.

"This way I hope to be in full condition for the next season", he said, and thanked his supporters.

Of the two grand slams and six Masters 1000 events on hard courts in 2018, Rafael Nadal has only finished one and will miss the ATP Finals.

"Against Novak Djokovic, the world No 1, that is the only explanation". I've been very close to making it for a number of years, but it just hasn't quite happened. But one of the least satisfying numbers, from the perspective of British tennis fans, will be his history of non-attendance at the ATP Finals. But he competed in only three events after the French Open in June.

Djokovic's dominant run ended on Sunday when he was beaten 7-5, 6-4 by Russian Kharen Khachanov in the Paris Masters final.

Meanwhile, reaching the final in London would rank alongside Anderson's US Open and Wimbledon final defeats against Nadal and Djokovic respectively as the most auspicious achievements of his career.
