Four more people were killed in the devastating wildfire that continued to tear through a northern California county - raising the death toll to nine, authorities said Friday night.

Five of the dead were found in cars in the town of Paradise in northern California that was destroyed by the Camp Fire.

"There are many hazards in areas where fatalities have been reported", the Butte County Sheriff's Department said in a statement, warning that they expect to find additional victims. The town of about 26,000 people lost all power Thursday as the violent blaze knocked out power lines; Pacific Gas and Electric Co.de-energized some lines as a precaution, reportedly at the request of firefighters, a spokesperson said late Thursday morning.

The blaze started on Thursday near Thousand Oaks, about 40 miles (64km) north-west of central Los Angeles, prompting the evacuation of 75,000 homes.

Sadly, when 27,000 residents are ordered to evacuate in a matter of hours, there's little that can be done to ensure every resident gets out safely.

Butte County Sherriff Kory Honea told the Chico Enterprise-Record that "it's bad".

Meanwhile, portions of Southern California remained under siege early Friday as two large fires threatened numerous Ventura County communities.

The LA County Sheriff's Office said it was receiving "many emergent phone calls" from people who "need our help to evacuate" and urged motorists in the area to be aware of emergency vehicles.

During the height of the blaze, firefighters completely surrendered firefighting duties in order to focus on rescuing people.

"There's nothing left standing", said Scott Maclean, the state's forestry and fire protection spokesman.

A separate fire is threatening Malibu and has caused the city to be evacuated.

"It is critical that residents pay close attention to evacuation orders", the Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted.

The "Woolsey Fire" has jumped Highway 101 near the town of Agoura Hills and portions of the main coastal north-south artery have been shut down, triggering mandatory evacuations, including the entire city of Malibu. Malibu lies along 21 miles of coastline and is home to 13,000, Hollywood stars among them. "Just landed back home and had one hour to pack up and evacuate our home".
