For this they used certain bacteria and graphene nanoribbon, which extend from the cap to the stem.

Cyanobacteria are known among bio-engineers for their ability to generate small jolts of electricity, but until now it has been hard to keep them alive in artificial conditions.

Scientists, including those of Indian origin, have created a bionic device that generates green power by 3D-printing clusters of cyanobacteria on an ordinary white button mushroom.

As researchers the world over search for alternative energy sources, there has been a sharp rise in interest in cyanobacteria, said a BBC report. When cyanobacteria are more densely packed, they're more likely to generate electricity.

American biologist Sudip Joshi from Institute of Technology of Stevens and his colleagues created from normal mushrooms first bionic body capable of conducting electricity and consists of different living beings and structures.

This served as an electricity-collecting network on the mushroom's cap which acting like a nano-probe and accessed bio-electrons generated inside the cyanobacterial cells. Thus, Joshi and his colleagues Packed cyanobacteria of the genus Anabaena in special nanoparticles and resettle them on the surface of the artificial mushrooms.

In an email to USA TODAY, Mannoor said they integrated the microbes and mushroom in a way that "the cyanobacteria is able to make the energy by photosynthesis while the mushroom provide it with the suitable "shelter" to do so". "It's just a start of a such a designer bionic mushroom", he said, adding that this is one of the first functional mash-ups of nanotechnology, fungus and bacteria.

To solve this problem, scientist Sudeep Joshi decided that environment for the bacteria to become mushrooms. They used a robotic arm-based 3D printer to print an "electronic ink" with the graphene nanoribbons and printed a "bio-ink" containing cyanobacteria onto the mushroom's cap in a spiral pattern. Imagine needles sticking into a single cell to access electrical signals inside it, explains Mannoor.

Shining a light on the mushrooms activates cyanobacterial photosynthesis mechanism, which generates bio-electrons these electrons are driven under an applied bias voltage in an electrochemical setup.

Dr Mannoor said: "By seamlessly integrating these microbes with nanomaterials, we could potentially realize many other unbelievable designer bio-hybrids for the environment, defense, healthcare and many other fields". To take an advantage of these capabilities, they designed a synthetic relationship between microbes and a mushroom that can produce electricity.

'For example, some bacteria can glow, while others sense toxins or produce fuel.
