Trump on Monday admitted the GOP could lose control of the House.

A spokesperson for Ms Pelosi said Mr Trump had called her to congratulate her party on winning a House majority, and acknowledged Ms Pelosi's call for bipartisanship.

A simple House majority would be enough to impeach Trump if evidence surfaces he obstructed justice or that his 2016 campaign colluded with Russian Federation. But Congress could not remove him from office without a conviction by a two-thirds majority in the Republican-controlled Senate. In turn, Trump began trying out defensive arguments ahead of Election Day, noting that midterm losses are typical for the party in the White House, pointing out a high number of GOP retirements and stressing that he had kept his focus on the Senate.

"Lavrov also reiterated Moscow's position that it is not meddling in US elections".

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday night told Democratic lawmakers and supporters that elections are about the future and "thank you all for making the future better for all of America's children".

In the Legislature, Democrats pinned their hopes on Republican-held seats where voters chose Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in 2016.

All 435 seats in the House, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate, and 36 of the 50 state governorships were up for grabs when polls opened. Other tight Senate races are in Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, Nevada, North Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Some of the campaign's biggest Democratic stars lost.

In Texas, Sen Ted Cruz staved off a tough challenge from Democrat Beto O'Rourke, whose record-smashing fundraising and celebrity have set off buzz he could be a credible 2020 White House contender.

U.S. midterms: Disappointed Democrats pin hopes on Florida's ex-cons
" Ron Desantis and congratulated him on what we expect will be him as the Governor of the great State of Florida ", said Gillum. DeSantis , a Harvard-educated lawyer, has said that he will appoint conservative justices who are "solid constitutionalists".

Manchester City 6-1 Southampton: Three match takeaways
There is a chance Hazard could start and be taken off at half time but I think he's more likely to introduce him from the bench. I watched the game against Liverpool and they struggled a lot. "Obviously if we don't drop points, we have the chance to do it".

But Andrew Gillum lost to Republican Ron DeSantis in his quest to become the first African-American governor of the key swing state of Florida.

In the leadup to the election, Republicans privately expressed confidence in their narrow Senate majority but feared the House could slip away. Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown is projected to keep his seat there, but Republican Mike DeWine holds a lead over Democrat Richard Cordray there. Tracy Kraft-Tharp, a Democrat, also has a almost 20 point lead over Republican Grady Nouis in District 29.

For Democrats, the road to the 218-seat majority ran through the two dozen suburban districts Clinton won and through swaths of Trump country in the Rust Belt and heartland where voters backed the president two years ago.

CBS News on Tuesday night projected Democrats would take control of the House of Representatives, delivering a major blow to President Trump and the GOP.

Trump himself noted the energy as he wrapped up a punishing schedule of rallies around the country that were meant to boost Republican candidates - and his own brand heading towards reelection in 2020.

The Democrats also won some of the high-profile governor's race including Kansas, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota.

Democrats turned out to register disapproval of Trump's divisive rhetoric and policies on such issues as immigration and his travel ban targeting several Muslim-majority countries. Democrats are relying more upon women, people of colour, young people and college graduates. Such a development would divide control of the U.S. legislature and hinder President Donald Trump's policy agenda for the next two years.

In total, Trump had held 26 rallies since October, embracing Democrats' attempts to make the election a referendum on his agenda. "All the GOP has is the other half of Congress, the Supreme Court, and a president who does whatever he wants". Among those expected were Trump's adult children, White House aides, Republican officials and presidential friends. "You see Americans come out and unanimously say they're proud of this president and what he has done in the two years".
