Strong blustery winds combined with dry conditions have helped the blaze spread, after weeks without rain and low humidity at the height of the wildfire season in north California.

Approximately 75,000 homes are under evacuation orders in Ventura and Los Angeles counties Friday morning.

One of the fires broke out Thursday north-west of Los Angeles and roared south, jumping the United States 101 freeway early Friday and sweeping into the Santa Monica Mountains.

The Woosley Fire exploded from 2,000 acres to 8,000 in Los Angeles and Ventura counties in a matter of hours Thursday night into Friday.

About 1,000 structures have been reportedly destroyed, majority in Paradise, a town of about 26,000 people that has been virtually wiped out by the exploding blaze, reports and photos show.

"We are still reeling, but we are also very resilient", she said.

As of Thursday evening, it was burning above Cal State University Channel Islands, in the footprint of the 2013 Springs Fire which burned 24,000 acres.

Fire officials initially ordred the evacuation of all 13,000 residents of the community, which stretches 21 miles along the ocean, but later scaled it back to the western two-thirds of the city.

Wind gusts of up to 77 miles per hour were reported in Los Angeles County on Friday morning.

North of Kanan Road, west of Lindero Canyon to SR-23 extending north of Sunset Hills Boulevard along Erbes Road to Olson Road.

Winds were expected to weaken Friday afternoon into Saturday.
