"I am the least racist person you have ever interviewed", Trump told reporters at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he was having dinner with Republican House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

"The remarks dishonour the celebrated American creed and respect for diversity and human dignity".

"If confirmed these are shocking and shameful comments from the President of the United States. They said those words were used before those words went public", Flake said.

Many Africans reminded the USA of its historic role in the continent's woes.

Trump appeared to give up for dead an immigration deal, coming back on the issue in a pair of early morning tweets three days after reportedly referring to African and Haitian immigrants as coming from "shithole countries", triggering global condemnation. "I don't know in which context they were made".

Prominent Kenyan commentator Patrick Gathara told AFP that Trump's words were nothing new. "We have consistently been portrayed as shitty people from shitty countries".

It bears repeating that " President Trump is a white racist!" philosophy professor George Yancy wrote in The New York Times . Tom Cotton said in a statement that they "do not recall the President saying those comments specifically".

"The AU mission condemns the statement in the strongest terms and demands a retraction of the comment as well as an apology to not only the Africans but to all people of African descent across the globe". However, Trump himself repeated the phrase during private phone calls later that same day.

"He didn't just name a white country, he named the whitest - so white they wear moon-screen", he said.
