Lashing out at AAP Cong says N D Gupta ‘close’ to BJP leader

Posting the letter filed by Maken to the Returning Officer for Biennial elections to the Council of Delhi-NCT pertaining to Rajya Sabha elections slated to be held on January 16, he tweeted, "Congress has filed objection at scrutiny of AAP Rajya Sabha candidate N.D. Gupta".

The AAP dismissed the charge, saying the Congress was trying to gain "cheap publicity" and said the law doesn't bar trustees from contesting.

Rajya Sabha candidate ND Gupta's candidature has been approved, quashing Congress complaints, AAP said here on Monday. He claimed ND Gupta was nominated because he is a "close friend of a senior BJP leader", The Indian Express reported.

Maken further said the BJP Government at the Centre had appointed ND Gupta as chairman of the "National Pension System Trust" (NPS) on September 18 in 2015.

Returning officer Nidhi-Srivastava said the matter has been deferred till Monday.

Gupta, along with two other Rajya Sabha candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party, Sanjay Singh and Sushil Gupta, had filed nomination papers on January 4. "Gupta's nomination is liable to be rejected under Section 36 of Representation of Peoples Act, 1951 read with Article 102 of the Constitution", Mr Maken claimed. Three Rajya Sabha vacancies had come up in Delhi due to the end of tenure of Congress members later in January.

In his response, Gupta said he has resigned from the trust previous year. Following the complaint, the Returning Officer had written a letter to Gupta. "Frivolous objections to gain cheap publicity by Congress", Chadha said.
