True to its name, Spectre will haunt the technology world for years. While Linus Torvalds may have a chip on his shoulder regarding making uncountable billions out of selling operating systems as the big tech corporates do, where his criticism is most valid is in pointing fingers at the CEO of Intel, Brian Kraznich, for having dumped about half his stock months after he may have learnt about the flaws in billions of his Intel microchips. Spectre, in particular, is a subtle vulnerability, and we'll likely be seeing additional protections worked into software over time. The weakness could allow hackers or computer viruses to tunnel right down to a computer's chip, from where it has much greater access to sensitive information such as credit card data and other valuable figures.

There are two separate problems.

Apple stated that watchOS is not affected by the Meltdown flaw.

The first, called Meltdown, affects Intel chips and lets hackers bypass the hardware barrier between applications run by users and the computer's memory, potentially letting hackers read a computer's memory and steal passwords.

How does this affect Apple?

Apple released patched versions of iOS 11.2, macOS 13.2 and tvOS 11.2 to defend against Meltdown and plans to roll out mitigations in Safari to fight Spectre's vulnerability in the coming days.

The firm has released some patches to mitigate the Meltdown flaw. To protect against Spectre and Meltdown malware Google already has issued some security updates.

So far, nobody has seen the flaws exploited in the wild.

Vendors are releasing patches for vulnerable systems and cloud environments like Amazon and Azure are patching the operating systems they deliver. Before the problems became public, Google on its blog said Intel and others planned to disclose the issues on January 9. To exploit the vulnerability, bad software needs to get into your machine, so the fewer opportunities you offer for that to happen, the better.

It said there was no evidence that either vulnerability had been exploited yet, but advised downloading software only from trusted sources to avoid "malicious" apps.

The progenitor of Linux, the free operating system, hit out at Intel Corp for having left everyone vulnerable like this. It may not block everything - new threats emerge all the time - but making things more hard for those who want to spread bad software isn't something you should dismiss.

Check "Settings" on your iPhone and iPad and "Updates" in the Mac App Store to make sure your devices are up-to-date.

For now, there's only one thing you can do: Update your devices and browser software when the updates are made available.
