As a result of warming waters and higher temperatures, that area is starting to slowly die, compromising marine life that resides there.

AUSTRALIA'S bid to save threatened species and rescue the Great Barrier Reef will be given a major boost today.

He said the money would be available to the world's "greatest scientific minds, industry and business leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs".

"We've received a strong endorsement that our Reef 2050 plan, which is a coordinated, integrated plan with the Queensland government, is working", he added, referring to plan presented by the Australian and Queensland governments in March 2015 that outlines actions, objectives and outcomes to preserve the reef from short and long term damage. The largest living structure is located in north-east Australia, and is the largest coral reef ecosystem in the world.

About half of the projects will tackle threats to the Great Barrier Reef.

Published on Tuesday (January 9) in the journal Current Biology, the report - from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, California State University and Worldwide Fund for Nature Australia (WWF) - warns that the nearly entire feminisation of Green Turtles in the Northern Barrier Reef could threaten the future of the population.

The proposal does not have an income criterion, as proposed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. The specified surgeries include heart bypass, cataract surgery and 17 types of kidney operations.

Australian government's Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg acknowledged on Tuesday that this is a big-scale problem which requires big thinking to solve.

In the initial stage of saving the Great Barrier Reef, up to $250,000 AUD will be available for individual researchers to test the technical and commercial viability of the proposal for up to six months.

"The announcement overnight from the World Heritage Committee is a big win for Australia and a big win for the Turnbull government", Frydenberg said previous year, Australian state broadcaster ABC reported.

The Australian government will provide another $1 million AUD for the best ideas and solutions.

At the next proof of concept stage, a further A$1 million (US$ 800,000) will be made available to the best solutions, where applicants can develop and test their prototypes for up to 12 months.

Queensland's Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef, Leeanne Enoch, urged innovative solutions, keeping in mind tourism, fishing and other sectors in the Great Barrier Reef.
