Pollution isn't just a problem here on Earth.
The researchers concluded this would be a feasible solution to the growing problem of space debris.
The lasers wouldn't entirely eliminate the space junk, but instead break it down into smaller pieces that pose less of a risk to future space missions.
'This satellite break-up represents the most prolific and serious fragmentation in the course of 50 years of space operations'.
A month later, a Russian rocket body exploded accidentally, littering the skies with more than 1,000 additional bits of space junk.
The research is published in the journal International Journal for Light and Electron Optics. Researchers have proposed dragging it out of orbit, trapping it in an orbital net, and even slowing it down so it would burn up in Earth's atmosphere.

Africans outraged over 'racist' Trump remarks
In Senegal's capital Dakar, administrator Idrissa Fall said "we can not really say that he (Trump) is wrong". Trump was widely derided previous year after twice referring to Namibia as "Nambia".
"This paper investigated the impacts of orbital elements of space-based laser station on small scale space debris removal by numerical simulation", the researchers wrote in their abstract. This zapping is created to either force the junk to burn up in the atmosphere or push it out of the way, preventing collision. For example, how many laser stations would be needed to deal with all of our space waste? In 2015, the ISS crew had to evacuate their living quarters after an old satellite threatened to collide with the station.
However, this laser-blasting plan isn't without issues.
China is one of the worst offenders when it comes to producing space junk, with just one anti-satellite test in 2007 generating thousands of items of unsafe debris. It is unclear whether it could push much larger pieces of space junk out of harm's way.
They continued, "The simulation results show that, debris removal is affected by inclination and RAAN, and laser station with the same inclination and RAAN as debris has the highest removal efficiency". Who should build them? How many would they build? The further informed that they analyzed the velocity variation of space debris ablating by the space-based laser station and then they modeled and studied that the orbital movement of the space debris irradiated by the laser station.
Government agencies would need to work out answers to these questions and others before this successfully simulated technology could be utilized in the fight against space junk.
The laser would fire 20 times per second at targeted debris, blasting them into smaller pieces so they pose no threat to Earth and also clear the way for new satellites.
