In a tweet Tuesday, Trump claimed that "Democrats want to shut down the Government over Amnesty for all and Border Security". Less than a week ago the U.S. president hosted a bipartisan meeting of members of Congress from both sides of the aisle in the White House at which representatives from both main parties underlined their willingness to progress immigration reform.

Before the ruling, President Trump tweeted "DACA is probably dead, because Democrats" don't really want it.

During his portion of questioning at the hearing, Graham said in reference to the immigration fight, "This has turned into a "s-show" and we need to get back to being a great country".

"The President's repulsive, racist comments the other day suggests that he is more interested in shutting down than resolving this issue", Van Hollen said.

Chances of a government shutdown grew Monday as Republicans concluded that they would be unable to reach a long-term spending accord by the Friday deadline.

"We're working now to add more Republicans to that list, and we will have more this coming week", Flake said on ABC.

The Senate will need 60 votes to approve any deal to avoid a shutdown.

"Close this deal", he said, referencing Trump. "The Democrats are negotiating in good faith".

The furor over the president's reported remarks about why the USA accepts immigrants from "shithole countries" like Haiti, El Salvador and African nationsrather than places like Norway, has hardened positions on both sides.

Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who is on the ballot in November and who voted with Republicans to help keep the government operating with a stop-gap measure in December, said he has little desire to see a shutdown. "I want to see it markedly more hard to sneak into this country and indeed have a process where people that desire to come live the American dream do so in a legal and forthright way". The president's inflammatory comments left lawmakers struggling to find a path forward.
