In a tweet Tuesday, Trump claimed that "Democrats want to shut down the Government over Amnesty for all and Border Security". Less than a week ago the U.S. president hosted a bipartisan meeting of members of Congress from both sides of the aisle in the White House at which representatives from both main parties underlined their willingness to progress immigration reform.

Before the ruling, President Trump tweeted "DACA is probably dead, because Democrats" don't really want it.

During his portion of questioning at the hearing, Graham said in reference to the immigration fight, "This has turned into a "s-show" and we need to get back to being a great country".

"The President's repulsive, racist comments the other day suggests that he is more interested in shutting down than resolving this issue", Van Hollen said.

Chances of a government shutdown grew Monday as Republicans concluded that they would be unable to reach a long-term spending accord by the Friday deadline.

Shortly before taking office previous year, Trump said he would hand off control of his global business empire to his sons Donald Jr. and Eric, and move his assets into a trust to help ensure that he would not consciously take actions as president that would benefit him personally.

Despite a public promise from Trump that he would sign "just about any" DACA solution offered by Congress, the president last week rejected a proposal that had support from Republican and Democratic senators. Officials said they will no longer accept requests for people that have never been protected under DACA. They make the case that we must increase our investments in domestic home-based priorities, including education, child care, and diplomacy, if we are to keep our country safe and to support our military.

"We're working now to add more Republicans to that list, and we will have more this coming week", Flake said on ABC.

The Senate will need 60 votes to approve any deal to avoid a shutdown.

"Close this deal", he said, referencing Trump. "The Democrats are negotiating in good faith".

The furor over the president's reported remarks about why the USA accepts immigrants from "shithole countries" like Haiti, El Salvador and African nationsrather than places like Norway, has hardened positions on both sides.

The president's inflammatory comments left lawmakers struggling to find a path forward.
